This article outlines the different possibilities that exist to implement Userlane into your IT landscape or a specific application.
Userlane Browser Extension
Overview
The Userlane Browser Extension provides a scalable, secure way to make interactive guides available without modifying your application’s source code. It supports analytics and advanced user targeting.
There are two different scenarios when choosing the Browser Extension as your preferred implementation option:
Seamless Rollout
Best for: Full-scale adoption across your entire organization.
How it works: Users are authenticated automatically with Single Sign-On (SSO) and the extension installs silently without manual steps.
Benefits:
Centralized deployment
Secure authentication
Rich insights via user attributes
Requirements:
SSO configured for your environment
Central extension rollout
Supported browsers: Firefox 109+, Chrome 88+, Edge 88+
Manual User Invitation via Email
Manual User Invitation (Ideal for Testing & Small Groups)
Best for: Pilot groups, QA teams, or small deployments.
How it works: Upload selected users to the Userlane Portal → they receive an invitation email → users install the extension manually.
Benefits: Great for controlled testing before a larger rollout.
Requirements: Same browser support as seamless rollout.
Userlane Snippet
Overview
If you have access to your application’s source code, you can embed Userlane using the JavaScript snippet. This method makes Userlane available immediately when the application loads — no extension required.
💡Good to know
The manually installed browser extension can still be used in the early stages to build and test your first Guides. Userlane will be shown in the application independent of the browser. Check this article to see how to import users to use the browser extension for testing.
Benefits
Userlane loads directly in the application (independent of browser extension)
Full analytics and segmentation capabilities
Works across major browsers and supports deeper integration into workflows
Great choice for internal apps or custom platforms where you control the codebase.
Requirements
Ability to deploy custom JavaScript
The app must operate from a single domain
Supported browsers:
Edge 79+, Firefox 60+, Chrome 70+, Safari 12+
⚠️ Please note that App Discovery does not work for a Snippet implementation.
